Winter Flying Tips
The winter flying with a drone has some specific needs so the flight will be safe as well as the equipment.
The following tips are valid for any model drone and if you keep them safe, you will be safe.
Tip Number 1 – Avoid any moisture as much as possible.
Moisture ruins the electronics of a drone. So as much as possible avoid almost all moistures. This means that if it is snowing make sure you have some source of cover, to be able to get the drone in safe and be sure that everything is ready to go before you put it out on the snow. Yes, you can fly in the snow, but just keep in mind that any moisture will ruin the electronics and could cause a crash.
Tip Number 2 – Do not add any extra weight.
So the cold will reduce the amount of flight you will gonna have. If you add more weight to your drone putting another camera or extra filters or something like that, you are just going to reduce the flight time even more. As much as possible fly the drone as it is because the time flight will be reduced and you don’t want to crash.
Tip Number 3 – Make sure everything is dry
Dry your propellers or any other aspects of your drone before you are taking it in the air. When you are flying in winter conditions it is cold. And a lot of time on cold could bring freezing. So if there is some sort of moisture on your drone, it could cause ice and that ice can cause your drone to crash at any moment.
Tip Number 4 – Don’t fly in any clouds
So clouds contain moisture. But flying into the clouds can cause your drone to get ice build-up. Wich can cause a crash.
Tip Number 5 – Know what altitude you are at.
Always keep in mind that as high you fly as your batteries will get drained. Try to fly no so high si you will extend the flight time.
Tip Number 6 – Avoid flying in a Storm
Except for avoiding to fly in the clouds, we advise you also do not fly in Snowstorms. They are also harmful. The reasons are the same as these of the clouds.
Tip Number 7 – Check the Batteries condition.
For avoid any unwanted drone fall down – always check the batteries before you take off. Make sure they are fully charged – at 100 %, and check all other parts of your drone before the flight.
The batteries are so important because if the voltage drops very quick the drone may fall down. So the things you can do to avoid any batteries drops: fully charge them for 24 hours before the flight, keep them on a warm place before the flight ( if you feel them like cold when you touch them – they are not good to fly), don’t fly straight in high altitude, in the clouds ( just fly for 30-40 seconds in low altitude to see how the batteries are doing. See if they have any big drops and if you notice some- then don’t fly).
